Discover the Best of Montreal’s Music and Cultural Summer Events
While Montreal may be world-famous for its wondrous winter atmosphere, the month of May is when Montreal summer festivals really begin to heat up. Millions of Montrealers will be flooding the city streets this summer as thoroughfares transform into street fairs for pedestrians, and areas like the Place des festivals prime for weeks of free music fests, culinary events and other extravaganzas all within city limits.
You’ll want to know where the celebrations are happening as Montreal’s festival season peaks this summer, so here is quick preview to some of the biggest festivals and events in Montreal in the summertime.
Québec’s National Holiday
This holiday originates from the tradition, prevalent in several countries, of celebrating the summer solstice by lighting bonfires and performing popular dances. June 24 was officially designated Québec’s National Holiday in 1977. Shows and bonfires will take place in several municipalities. See more at: Fête nationale du Québec à Montréal

If you enjoy free outdoor jazz, then this summer you’ll love the fact that the largest jazz festival in the world will be coming to Montreal. From June 29 to July 9, millions will attend more than 300 hundred jazz shows in downtown Montreal, featuring more than 3,000 musicians spread out over 10 days. Montreal International Fireworks Competition
Known as the L’International des Feux Loto-Québec, competing pyrotechnics teams will put forth their best firework displays, synchronized to music! While the competition will run from July 2 of 2016 and is completely free from your balcony or rooftop, you can pay to get up close to the action by swinging by La Ronde, a theme park that will hold all-day pyro festivities.
